Top 100 Sex Bloggers of 2009

I just discovered that I’ve been chosen one of the top 100 sex bloggers by Between My Sheets and 13 other judges! I’m ranked number 21, pretty amazing when just a few years ago, nobody talked about senior/elder sex! See all 100 here, and be sure to visit the sites of the judges, too.

I’m about to turn 66 (tomorrow), and I’ll bet I’m the oldest sex blogger on the list, as well as, perhaps, the only one who uses her/his real name!

It’s funny, in a way, how these things work out. During my first year after Robert’s death, a time of extreme grieving, I couldn’t focus well enough to work on anything that demanded more than an hour of concentration at a time.

I was still interested in helping the readers who wrote me with questions (we help ourselves by helping others, I firmly believe), so my blog was the perfect outlet. It gained momentum as you, its readers, recognized its value. I put more time and energy into my blog in 2009 than its first four years combined. I consider my #21 ranking among the Top 100 Sex Bloggers an honor!

Thank you, Between My Sheets, judges, and readers!

    Some comments on the comments:

First of all Scott has obviously not been reading your blog for long. Otherwise he would know that you, Joan, have plenty of experience with hetero sex with a partner, and in a very meaningful fulfilling relationship.

I feel sorry for people who think sex always has to be with a partner. Humans have so many varied ways of sexual expression, and I've gone into these in previous comments. I think that Scott has a very narrow and limited view, but at least he doesn't seem to be excluding gay and lesbian sex.

I used to think that Joan's posts were too much about only hetero sex, and only with a partner, but that was what her experience was at the time so that's what she wrote about for the most part.

As for our overtly religious friend here, I think I'll share one of my favorite jokes, reflecting my own deeply held belief that God enjoys a good joke from time to time. God is great and can handle a joke. (0ne might also wonder what a person who thinks sexuality is a sin except under very strict parameters is doing reading this website in the first place.)

A man dies and goes to Heaven. St. Peter meets him at the gates to give him the grand tour. They go around to all these wonderful places where souls who have passed on are existing in heavenly bliss, and they come to this door that's tightly shut. St. Peter says, "Now, you can go where you want to here, but whatever you do, don't open that door!" "Why?" says the man. St. Peter responds, "That's where we keep the Church of Christ people, they think they're the only ones up here."

I think it's important to remember that Jesus Christ is all about unconditional love and forgiveness/release from our mistakes, whatever they may be. He also never said that everyone had to belong to the same religion, and much of his time was spent in overturning all the restrictions so that everyone could receive Grace. Humans love to make religion into a country club where only those who follow one or another set of complicated and often ridiculous human created rules can belong, only those who believe certain things and not others are accepted by God. This is humans getting in the way of the Divine. The love of God is there for everyone to embrace or not, as they choose, and the "rules" are simple, though not always easy.

That being said, I do agree that in the sexual arena there is much potential for making mistakes which can hurt ourselves and others. This is probably why humans have made so many rules to attempt to govern sexual behavior. Still I don't think that God gave us sexuality (we are the Creations of God, are we not?) to just ignore, deny, and suppress. As a deeply spiritual person, and as someone who strives to practice Christian ideals, I firmly believe that God loves our healthy sexual expressions along with all the other aspects of our humanity.

I'm not surprised that Joan's website is among the winners for best senior sexuality blogs. It's cool that there are so many nowadays. When I first started visiting this one, I did a search one day and didn't find much, and nothing as forthright, practical, and interactive as this site.

    Congratulations, Joan!

You deserve this honor, and I'm delighted to see it.

My goodness, what interesting readers are finding my blog these days! I'm sorry, Kold_Kadavr_flatliner, but I'll politely refuse your offer of a beer in heaven. I don't like beer, and I won't go to the same heaven you do, by your own definition of who gets in. You'll hardly miss me among the sextillions waiting for you.

I'd sure hate to see you go to Hell for promoting what's right in todays society (wrong by God). But, hey, not everybody goes to Heaven in this Finite Existence; most people go to the Abyss of Misery. You must make a choice in this proving grounds. I am. I've made my choice. I'm following Jesus. Are you? Are you following Jesus in this lifelong demise or are you following the world in alla her superficial vanity? Why is sex so pleasing to the eye? So easy to write about? So without thot, without love: just put your P in V. Why can't we be abstinant and wait? Don't Miss Understand me, toots. I'm a full-blooded male with a whole lotta desires, but, alas, this world is truly passing and I should wait for the woman of my dreams: the ones Upstairs which are in the SEXTILLIONS (yep, that's a very real number). You're very gorgeous and wonderfull I'd imagine. Let's have a beer in Heaven Above at the local bar and celebrate your resurrection… and make love after for 10 days DOMINUS VOBISCUM

Thank you for the biggest belly laugh of the day, Scott. And what is "actual sex"? I can tell you haven't glanced at my book! Even apart from that, though, are you saying that if I'm not describing personal sex acts with a partner, I have no credibility as a sex educator?

  7. Scott on November 10, 2009 at 7:27 pm

Joan, I think that a space that addresses senior sex is great. However, what I see are a number of posts that talk about sex toys and online dating sites and some blogs, but not, you know, actual sex. And I understand your loss, but also get the impression that you are not actually having sex, at least not with another person. Maybe I'm wrong and I didn't go back far enough in your blog, but I think it begs the question of how much credibility you have in the area.

Congratulations, Joan. I just discovered your blog, and since I am fast approaching sixty and my husband is already there, I've added you to my blogroll. I think you have a lot of useful advice that I have been looking for.
